Runners and Fighters

(Robbie Williams - I tried love)

Yesterday I realised something. We are not all fighters. There is also runners. And I never realised it until I noticed that it isn't a character thread of a single person.

Runners, try to solve the issue's in their lives by bailing out, or running away from them. Cutting their losses and remove the problem from their lives. In that process they might lose more then they bargained for.

Fighters, try to solve the issue's in their lives by confronting them, or fighting them. They try and solve rather then remove the problem, but have no guarantee it will succeed. But keeping gain to a maximum.

I am not going to insinuate that one of the two is better then the other.

However Runners eventually settle for happiness, and settle for what they have as all they can achieve and get. As they do not fight for something better. They lead a simple life, where all their good things come easy, and all the bad things come hard.

And fighters attempt to find their happiness as they please, at the risk of losing it again one day. They lead an uncertain life as they have no warranties that their ventures might succeed. But all good things are hard won and bountiful, and all bad things are just things that are their limitations.

In essence both could probably be happy, but runners will never really get what they really need/want. And fighters, as long as they don't turn into runners, do. So eventually (some) fighters do get what they want, and do live happy lives. It just sucks when a fighter falls in love with or has friends who are runners. As they will always be the ones getting the worst of it. In that sense being a runner might seem the better option. But being a runner, you must accept that it is very likely that the best things in life, will be the things you lose.

As nothing worth having in this world comes easy. In that sense, if the world would be full of fighters. We'd live in a happy world, where everyone has a few good friends, and people love one another truly. If the world would be full of runners, we'd live in a content world with lots of parties, alcohol, and superficial relations, but love would be something you can only be lucky to have.

And with that conclusion I am more likely to conclude that the world currently has an increasing number of runners. Outweighing the world's fighters 10 to 1. And that is a little sad.

So to all the runners out there: You don't have to run, some things are really worth fighting for. And living true, hard and honest will make friendships and love so much stronger and better.
And to the fighters: Hang in there, keep strong, and you will get there. And if you fail, try again. If the results wouldn't be worth it, you wouldn't be fighting for it!

  1. I must admit I have had many people asking me about this. Don't think too much in absolutes. You are not always a fighter, and not always a runner. And for the sake of self preservation, sometimes a fighter needs to run. It is however the moment of (mental) exertion when this running comes that defines the strength of our resolution. And that takes time and effort to build. The question only is, do you take that time or not? And that is the real question you should ask yourself.
